Most of the beaches you will find on the bucket list location of the Amalfi Coast have sun loungers that will cost you a pretty penny.

Here is a list of dream like beaches that are free to swim in and lay your towel down for the day!

Bonus tip: Be sure to bring a thick towel and possibly water shoes as these are black pebble beaches that are extremely hot and uncomfortable to walk on, especially in mid day sun!

We laid our stuff out and swam at each beach, just covering our things with our clothes and nothing was ever stolen or touched. We also never encountered jelly fish, but have heard of quite a few people coming here and getting stung!

Amalfi

In the center of Amalfi you will see the beach. It is right next to the bus station where you arrive from Positano, Ravello, Sorrento, etc.

On the left is the sun lounger for pay section, and on the right is the free section. We went here in the morning and it was not crowded, but was a rather small beach and swimming area. But beautiful nonetheless!

Atrani

Atrani also has a free beach next to its sun loungers, but we did not swim here, although it did look nice! Atrani is the next town over from Amalfi, about a 5-10 minute walk.

Ravello

This next beach is Spaggia di Castiglione in the town of Ravello. (Spaggia means beach in Italian!)

We walked to the beach from Amalfi. It is a bit confusing because Google Maps tells you to walk on the side of the busy road, and there is literally no other way to walk there. But hey, we saw other people doing it, so we did too! We came out okay, and it wasn’t as dangerous as I originally expected; just walk fast.

The beach is actually right at a bus stop too, so after we were done here we went up to explore Ravello! There are about 200 steps to get down to this beach.

Positano

There were two free beaches we came across in Positano.

The first is on the main beach, in between where the ferries come in, and where the sun loungers for pay are. This is honestly a very small, narrow beach that gets very crowded, as does everything in Positano. If you are only going to take a dip and stay a few hours or less it’s not bad. However, we did splurge our full beach day in Positano on the front row sun loungers at around 20 euro per person (yikes!)

Positano just feels so magical and swimming all day and relaxing was well worth it to us since we were there from morning until sunset. Also, we budgeted so great the rest of the trip, we treated ourselves to this day, and if you have some extra cash and are spending the day, I would recommend it. Treat yo self!

However if you swim in the free beach, you will have the same gorgeous views of Positano!

The next beach in Positano is Fornillo Cove, about a 15 minute walk from the main beach and town center. If you’re looking at the town of Positano from the beach, you will go to the left and there are signs. Not many people go here so it is a little less crowded. There are also sun loungers for pay here too and a restaurant/ bar. The free section is alllll the way down to the right. We came here after hiking the Path of the Gods and it was so refreshing!

Ugh so pretty I could die!

And that concludes the free beaches we visited while on the Amalfi Coast!

We went to coast the first week of September and half of our time spent in the water and I just can’t wait until I am on an Italian beach again!
